Nurse Jenny

Helping others has always been a part of who I am. My father recognized this trait in me at the tender age of just 4 years old. It has always been innate in me to assist others, so it was only logical to pursue a path that allowed me to do so.
First, as a Nurse's Aide, and later as a Nurse, I've cherished many years in the medical profession. My initial position as a nurse was with two doctors, a married couple, in their office - Dr. S and Dr. N. These weren't their real names, but that's how everyone addressed them - be it other physicians, nurses, or patients. I believe only they could pronounce their actual names correctly.
He specialized in internal medicine, while she was a cardiologist. Being their sole nurse, I conducted all the tests they prescribed, from blood tests and X-rays to heart monitoring and stress tests. The salary was modest, to say the least, but the experience I gained was invaluable, and for that, I am deeply grateful.

After that experience, I progressed in my career, moving to a smaller hospital with fewer than 200 beds. Subsequently, I took on the role of Assistant Director of Nursing, where I primarily worked with the elderly. My journey then led me to Home Health, and it was here that I had my first genuine encounter with CPR.

I was relatively new to Home Health and was shadowing another nurse, Caroline, who was guiding me through my new role. We were seated at the kitchen table with our clients, an elderly couple.

As Mr. X momentarily left the room, a sudden turn of events took place. Mrs. X, without any warning, stopped breathing and slumped forward. It was a jarring transition - one moment she was conversing, and the next, her heart ceased. Without hesitation, Caroline and I sprang into action. Our training in CPR equipped us with the skills needed for such emergencies. As we checked for responsiveness, we simultaneously shouted for Mr. X to dial 911.

In mere moments, we had Mrs. X on the floor, initiating CPR. We alternated between mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions, executing each step with the precision of seasoned professionals. It's not about boasting, but in moments of crisis, the value of thorough training becomes abundantly clear.

Caroline, dressed impeccably and sporting bright red lipstick, and I didn't miss a beat. She delivered two swift breaths, while I, having located the correct hand placement, began the chest compressions. This intense routine lasted for about 15 minutes. And just as the Emergency Medical Response Team made their entrance, Mrs. X started breathing independently and slowly opened her eyes.

Mrs. X made a full recovery and lived on for many more years. That day was truly memorable! We had made a tangible difference, saving a life in the process. Mr. and Mrs. X were immensely grateful for the second chance to continue their journey together, creating a lasting legacy of a joyous, lifelong marriage. We couldn't help but admire Mr. X's composure as he dialed 911 using a rotary phone (and for the younger readers, this wasn't a touchscreen). As we prepared to leave, our eyes briefly met with his as he boarded the ambulance, taking his place next to his beloved wife. The tears of gratitude in his eyes were unmistakable.

Years passed, and my career took me back to the hospital, then to Home Health once more. I ventured into a Traveling Nurse position, which was short-lived and admittedly not for everyone. From there, I transitioned to Hospital Agency, and eventually returned to the hospital. I've spent the last 18 years there, dedicating the recent 10 specifically to Postpartum. Today, I stand proud as a certified American Heart Association Instructor.

Starting my nursing journey working for a cardiologist and now, as a certified American Heart Association Instructor, it feels like I've come full circle.

I firmly believe that everyone should be equipped with CPR and life-saving skills. And here's my passionate plea to you: Don't wait for a sign or a push. Take the initiative to get CPR certified. You never know when you might be the difference between life and death for someone. Equip yourself with this invaluable skill, and be ready to be someone's hero.
